Leafy sprig arc on upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a slender branch with pairs of leaves and buds forms a open arc, with a short stem crossing its base. The linework is thin and even, with the leaves finished in simple outlines and little or no shading. The photograph shows the tattoo in black ink on pale skin, against a blurred wooden backdrop and a yellow top.

Sit down, you, and mind the bench, it has a loose leg like every official in this valley. I'll tell it the way my grandmother told it, slowly, because a border is a slow thing even when the men on it are in a hurry.

The guard at Sobrano Pass was called Teodor, and he loved his stamp more than his wife. One March morning an old man came up the switchbacks with a goat, a canvas satchel and a face like a dried plum. Teodor opened the satchel and found, wrapped in a damp handkerchief, a slender sprig of myrtle no longer than a finger, its leaves paired along the stem like buttons on a good coat. 'Plants cross under the law only with a form,' Teodor said. The old man said the form was in his head. The sprig was a cutting for his daughter's grave on the far side, he said, and she had died without ever seeing the wreath he had promised her.
Teodor could have stamped it and burned it. Instead he looked at the buds, small and tight, and remembered his own mother bending a branch of that same shrub into a ring for the church door each spring. He turned it in his big fingers. Finding no form, he wrote one on the back of a ticket: one sprig, one arc, one soft-hearted official, signed.
The old man went down the far side and Teodor never saw him again. Each spring after that, the guards at Sobrano say, a small green ring appears on a grave nobody in the village will admit to tending, bent into a shape like a horseshoe, and no one on either side is quite sure who keeps putting it there.
