Blossom branch on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Colour · Photo
A small branch with thin twigs, several buds and one open pink blossom sits on the ankle. The linework is fine and dark, with the petals shaded in soft pink and red tones. The design is centred on the ankle against a plain skin background, with a dark leather surface and blurred room behind.

Sit closer, the lot of you, because the wind up on the fourteenth floor takes every word off the balcony and drops it in the car park with the pigeon feathers. Mrs Okonedo's boy planted a stone in a chipped flowerpot the summer the lifts broke for good, and nobody thought much of it until the stone sent up a stick.

The stick grew thin and crooked, reaching for the grey light over the bins. Then a man from the council came with a clipboard, peered at it through his glasses and said it was a weed that would not see November. Mrs Okonedo said nothing. She fetched her late husband's tin of watercolours, dried into little cakes, wet them with a thimble of tea, and painted the twigs herself, one bud each evening, so the branch would know it was expected.
Come March, it opened one blossom, pink as a cheek that has been out in the cold and walked into a warm kitchen. Word went round faster than the lift ever did. The man from number nine came down with his dog, the girls from the twelfth floor who never said good morning stood beside him, and the whole block gathered in the car park with their faces turned up like sunflowers, not one of them speaking above a murmur for fear of startling it.
The council man came back in April with a notice in a plastic sleeve. He read the blossom for a long time, then slid the notice into the crack of the pot, folded in half, and walked off without his clipboard. Mrs Okonedo kept the tin on the sill after that. Nobody has dared to call it a weed since, and the bins have never looked so pretty.
