Arrow and loop symbol on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A blue tattoo of an upward arrow with barbed tips sits above a horizontal bar and a looped shape that curves into a heart-like form. The linework is bold and solid, with the ink filled evenly in a single blue tone. The design is centred on a close crop of smooth skin, with the rest of the arm out of frame.

Dear Hesper,

The chain at Cold Ferry parted on Tuesday, so I have been rowing the north channel by hand, and my palms have opened up again under the tar. Forgive the smudges. The lamp is guttering and I am writing on the back of the tide tables, which is the only paper the Crown has not yet taxed.

You asked in your last what the mark on the lintel means, the one Mother Ansel cut into the ferryhouse door before she went to the convent at Thrae. It is a map of the crossing, if you hold it right. The upward barbed arrow is the flood, sharp enough to cut a hull, and it points the way the water wants to go. The bar beneath is the chain itself. The loop hanging from it is the knot the old ferrymen tied for anyone who could not pay the toll: a fare sworn in string, to be settled on the far bank by whatever they had left behind.

Last night a woman came down the shingle in grey wool, carrying a child's shoe and no purse at all. She asked for the knot passage. I told her the chain was broken, and she said the chain had always been broken, that was why the knot existed. So I took her over. The river was black and fast, and neither of us spoke until the keel grounded on the mud at Sallow Reach.

On the far bank she pressed a length of cord into my palm. It was warm, as if she had been holding it against her chest for a very long time. When I looked back she had gone, though the shoe lay on a flat stone with its lace undone.

The arrow still points upriver, of course. I have stopped trusting it to tell me where to go. Come home before the frost. Bring a new chain.

Yours, Tamsin
