Stylised eye symbol on the inner wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black tattoo of a stylised symbol sits on the inner wrist, combining a curved, eye-like motif above a sweeping hooked stroke. The linework is bold and solid with no shading, and the design is shown in one flat black ink against light skin. The image is centred on the tattoo with a plain pale background.

The brass hook by the scullery door had been bent for as long as anyone at Gull House could remember, and Maud Teague blamed the lodgers for it every Saturday, the same way she blamed them for the damp, the gulls and the sixpences that went missing from the tea caddy.

Mr Vane had taken the back parlour since Lady Day. He was a retired chart-maker with ink under his nails and a habit of sketching on the blotting paper while he waited for his supper. Maud found the same mark on it every morning: a round eye sitting above a long stroke that curled back on itself like a hook after a fish. 'Old harbour sign,' he said, when she asked. 'The sea keeps a ledger too, Mrs Teague. It only shows the balance when it's ready.'

The gale came in on a Tuesday. Maud went down at midnight with a candle to check the bolts and found the parlour door ajar and Vane gone. The harbour book lay open on the table where he'd left it. Someone had inked that same eye over the page listing the Brothers Sayer, the cobble boat that had gone out in '09 and never come back, and the hooked stroke ran straight through the name so cleanly it looked drawn with a rule.

By morning the wind had dropped. The blotting paper was blank. On the scullery hook hung a wet oilskin that had not been there the night before, and the brass, for once, was straight.
