Heart and swirl tattoo on skin

Other · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a black heart at the top that flows into a looping, S-shaped curve ending in a hook at the bottom. The lines are bold and solid black with slight variation in weight, and there is no colour or shading. The tattoo sits centre frame against warm skin, with a green fabric fold along the lower left edge.

Right, sit down, the lot of you, and mind the pram. You want the one about the kite? Then listen. Fourteen storeys up, Ashdown House had a lift that smelled of vinegar and a roof where the wind went round like it had mislaid its keys. Every Sunday a girl called Tamsin climbed up there with a reel of grey string and a paper heart she'd cut from a seed packet.

She tied the string to the heart and let it go, and the wind carried it out over the car park, over the bins, over the school with the broken clock. The heart kept rising. It was only when the string ran slack that Tamsin understood it was not coming back down by itself.

Then Mr Vidal, the caretaker, who had a bad knee and a hook for every problem, came up the stairwell with his long pole. He caught the string at the top of the parapet and looped it round once, then twice, so the line bent into a long S that swung back toward her like a question he already knew the answer to. Tamsin took the end in both hands. The heart came home crumpled and wet, and she pressed it flat under her mattress for forty years.

So when the wind gets up on Ashdown Road, look at the top of the block. You'll see a loop of grey string still tangled round the railing, and a little paper heart going round and round, held by an old man's hook.
