A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had buried the north road by four o'clock, and Maud Ferrier sent you down to the cellar for the last of the lamp oil. On a shelf beside the paraffin you found a small tin box, painted long ago with a flower you did not recognise: layered petals, stippled like frost on a window, with two thin pendants hanging beneath, each ending in a tiny diamond.

Maud saw you holding it. "Lotus," she said, taking it from you gently. "My grandfather brought it back from a port none of us will ever see. Nothing grows here that opens on water. The valley is too cold for that sort of thing."

You asked her why anyone would keep a flower that could never live in the valley.

She wiped her hands on her apron and looked out at the white window. "Because the pond behind the stable froze solid the winter he came home, and he sat beside it every morning with his tea, waiting. In the thaw one bloom came up under the ice, so thin the cold had made the petals lace. He said it was the only thing he ever saw that was properly stubborn." She pressed the box back into your hands. "Take the oil up before the lamps go out."

You carried the oil up the stairs. In the morning the snow had stopped, and you walked out to the stable pond with the box under your arm. The ice had split along one narrow seam, and through it a dark green shoot was pushing up, its tip still closed, holding a single drop of meltwater like a diamond.
