Arrow symbol with blue waves on shoulder
Shoulder · Mixed · Photo
A grey and black arrow passes diagonally over a stylised symbol with curled ornamental strokes. Behind it, soft blue wash shapes and swirling wave forms fill the area, with shading that gives them depth. The tattoo sits on a bare shoulder, with a white garment and a dark strap at the left edge of the frame.

Old Harrow the signalman kept his lamp trimmed at the end of the sea wall, where the line ran out onto the shingle and stopped. Every night the tide came up under the platform and every night the trains from the north came in late, because the water had got into the points again. The stationmaster said it was rust. The fishwives said it was the sea wanting something back.

One November the youngest porter, a lad called Tobin Reeve, took the lamp from its hook without asking and walked out along the sea wall with a length of brass signal rod under his arm. He had been told the old story, that the sea would let a train through if someone loosed an arrow into the swell at the turn of the tide, the way his grandmother had once freed a drowned bell. He did not believe it. He was cold, and the night was long, and the points were stiff under his boots.
He drew back the rod and let it fly over the black water. It bent in the light of the lamp, curling as if caught by a wind that nobody else could feel. It did not sink. It turned in a slow ring of foam, then stood up straight and pointed down the line towards the town. The points clicked over by themselves, and far off a whistle sounded, thin and glad.
In the morning the rod was lying on the platform, dry as bone, and the sea had drawn a pattern of curls on the sand below the wall that the tide never afterwards smoothed away. Tobin did not go back to the signal box. He kept the lamp, though, and whenever the water rose he lit it and swung it slowly over the sea, as if guiding someone out there who had lost the way home.
