Tribal circle tattoo on upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A man's upper arm and shoulder show a bold tribal tattoo built around a large open circle with curling, spiked flourishes radiating outward. The forms are solid black with white highlights and grey shading that gives them a raised, three-dimensional look. The design fills most of the frame against a dark background, with the skin tone of the arm providing contrast.

The last northbound slides through Scarsby Junction without stopping, its tail lamp shrinking into the dark, and you are left with the hum of the sodium lamps and the rain ticking on the iron canopy. Out in the goods yard the old turntable sits where it has sat since 1911, a great black ring with spokes that curl at their ends like something that wants to climb.

Nobody has turned it in forty years. Your grandfather used to say the trick was to listen for the pawl dropping into its notch, a clack you could feel through your boots. Tonight you put your shoulder to the bar and it groans, then gives, and the whole table swings slowly through a half circle of wet sleepers, white paint flaking from its rim where the light from the signal box catches it.

Halfway round it stops with a jolt. In the pit beneath, where the rain has pooled black, a brass lamp glints: a railwayman's lamp, its glass still whole, its wick long dead. Someone has scratched a name into the housing, and beneath it a date three days before the armistice. You crouch and hold it up to the signal light, and the shadows of the spokes fan across the platform like a hand opening.

You do not take it home. You set it on the sleeper where the wind cannot reach it, walk back to the box to log the night's final movement, and in the book, under the tally of trains, you write the name out carefully, as if it might answer.
