Matching split heart tattoos on wrists

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are placed side by side, each carrying one half of a heart made from bold black scrollwork and curling tendrils. When the wrists meet, the two halves join into a single heart shape. The solid black linework is smooth and the small curls are finely detailed, set against plain, lightly shaded skin.

Dearest Wren, the tide-clerk has finally agreed to carry this letter across the Sunken Marches, though he charges a silver thimble for every mile and I have paid him in full. You will remember the tower at Harrowmere, where the bells rang backwards on feast days. The old queen's gardener still keeps the iron gate you used to climb, and the rose that grew through it has finally flowered, pale and stubborn as ever.

I went to the glassmaker's stall on the quay, as we promised each other we would, and asked for the heart-cutter. She sat with her hands folded in her apron and told me that a heart split down the middle is only honest when both halves are cut from the same grief. I did not understand her until I held my own wrist against the cold blue glass of the window and saw the curl of the lattice fall exactly where the tendril of yours would have been, had you been standing beside me.

So I have had the cutter take the ink from the old well at Harrowmere, the one where we dropped our names. When this letter reaches you, put your left wrist against the sill of the south window and press. If the swirls meet, you will know I am still waiting at the gate, and that the bells have finally stopped ringing backwards.
