The bats came in through the gap above the cold room every night the wind swung north, and Vera Szabo never once shooed them out. She set a saucer of cream on the marble counter and called it the late shift's wages. By midnight the café smelled of vanilla and scorched sugar, and the four of them hung from the pendant lights, folded tight as dropped gloves, waiting for the last order.

The last order always came from the same woman, who wore a black ribbon pinned at her throat and never gave her name. She wanted a milkshake thick enough to hold a spoon upright, and a cupcake with the frosting piped into a tight spiral. Vera made both without asking why. The ice cream she had ordered only once, in March, and had not come back for since, though Vera kept a scoop of pistachio chilled for her anyway.

Near closing one night, the woman leaned on the counter and looked at the cream saucer. 'They remember who feeds them,' she said, and laid a teaspoon beside the saucer. When Vera turned from the till, the woman had gone, the door still chiming, and the bats had come down to the counter in a row, each one nosing at the spoon.

In the morning the spoon was back in the drawer, bent into the shape of a bow, and four small bats slept on the lintel with a speck of lilac sugar on each wing.
