Arrow tattoo designs sheet
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A sheet of hand-drawn arrow designs, including a feathered arrow with a bow tie-like midsection, a single arrow pointing down, three crossed arrows, and several long arrows at the bottom, one with a rope wrapped around the shaft. The arrows use fine outlines with shaded or hatched fletching and arrowheads on a plain white background. The ink is black and grey with soft shading, and the sheet is arranged as a set of separate motifs.

The bosun hands you the bow on the third day out of Falmouth, because the foremast has split a shroud and nobody else aboard the Mercy Jane can hit a pulley block at forty yards. He tells you to bind the messenger line to the shaft, wind the rope twice around, and mind the fletching. It is goose feather cut the old way, three to a shaft, each vane hatched with a knife so the wind takes it true.

The sea is pewter and rising. You knock the first arrow and it goes wide, the rope snaking after it like a fuse. The second clears the block. You feel the weight of the line leave your hands and something loosen under your ribs. The bosun says nothing. He spits over the rail and nods at the third arrow, the one with the crooked head he filed himself the night before, while the cook held the lantern and swore at the wind.
For a moment three shafts hang together above the swell, crossing in an X that the crew will talk about in Valparaiso, though no two of them will agree on what it meant. The third drops short. You haul it back dripping, its point still keen, and find the bosun's initials scratched beneath the feathers where he thought no one would look.
Six days later the cutter's boy is found lashed to her mast, alive, his own knot already tied. The bosun takes the arrow from your hand, slides it into the quiver without a word, and only then says the Jane has never lost a man yet. You understand, for the first time, that he has been counting you among them.
