Dreamcatcher with feathers and red beads
Mixed · Flash
A dreamcatcher with a circular brown woven web of concentric lines hangs from a central loop. Five feathers in brown, red, teal and cream hang below on thin cords, interspersed with red and turquoise beads. The design is drawn with soft shading and fine detail on a plain white background, centred in the frame.

Mags Tolland had been weaving willow hoops in the back room of the chandler's shop on Church Stairs since the spring her father's boat came home without him. Nobody in Whitby bought them for the reasons the tourists supposed. They bought them because Mags sold them cheap, and because a hoop with a grey gull feather hanging from it was a fine thing to hang over a cot.

The web was the hard part. She wound the willow tight, then laced the middle with waxed linen in a spiral that never quite closed, so the eye at the centre stayed open, a bright hole no bigger than a farthing. Her mother said that was where the bad dreams drained out. Mags thought it was just where the light got in, but she left it open all the same.
One November a man came in off the late tide asking for a hoop with feathers from something that flew further. She had a jay's wing and two cream feathers from a barn owl that nested in the abbey ruins. He chose red beads from a broken rosary he said he had no use for, and turquoise glass from a Hull pawnbroker, and paid her in shillings he had dried on the stove. He hung the hoop over his bunk and did not sleep for three nights.
On the fourth morning he came back and said the hoop had caught his dreams and held them, and he could not bear to look at them. He wanted it taken down. Mags unpicked the linen, and found the feathers gone soft and grey with handling. She hung the frame back in the shop window beside the tide tables, where the morning light came through the open centre and fell across the floor in a small bright coin. She never told him that the best dreams slip through the middle.
