A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Old Tobin Vale painted the signs for every booth on the Michaelmas fair, and he did it with gold leaf he bought from a man in Lincoln who never asked where the money went. The arrows came first, because the fair had to be found by travellers who could not read. Then the swallows, because his mother said swallows always know the road back to a place. Last of all came the dreamcatcher over the fortune tent, because Miss Ada Pyle wanted her customers to feel they had been caught by something gentle.

One autumn the fair stopped at a village where the lane forked three ways and nobody could agree which one led to the next town. Tobin climbed the church tower with his brushes and a pot of size and painted a gold chevron on the stone where the lane turned. Then he painted another. By dusk he had painted eleven, one for every fork and crossroads the fair had ever lost on its way, and the village children followed the marks from stone to stone like a string of beads.

The fair packed up before dawn and went on without him, because Tobin had fallen asleep against the tower wall with gold dust in his boots. When he woke the lane was empty, but a pair of swallows sat on the wire above him, pointing their forked tails east like needles. He followed them all morning, and by noon the striped roofs showed above the hedge.

Ada met him at the gate with her arms folded. "You took your time," she said. "The feathers are waiting." He never told her the swallows had done the finding, and she never asked, which is how most of the best things at a fair are kept.
