Twisted rope ring tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest together, each with a thin black tattoo wrapped around a finger. The upper hand shows a twisted rope band around the ring finger, and the lower hand shows a narrower twisted line band around a finger further along. The ink is solid black with simple linework, set against natural skin tones on a plain background.

Dear Ada,

Don't scold me for the rope. I know Mr Pryce will have told you I took the offcut from the shaft house, but he gave me leave, and the splicer, old Hal Musgrove, measured it against my finger and then against the length of the pencil line you drew on the back of a cutting last Whitsun. He said a rope that has held a cage full of men up a thousand feet can surely hold a ring. I told him it was the cage that had the knack of holding, and the ring only had to hold you.
The first strand came off the drum at six this morning, and the second at nine, when the whistle went for the dinner shift. Hal worked it by lamplight because the sun never reaches the splicing shed before noon, and I sat on an upturned bucket counting the lays out loud the way my father counted coal. Forty turns, he said, for a band that will outlast us both. I told him that was a morbid sum, and he laughed so hard he dropped his fid into the sawdust.
Enclosed is the narrow one, which is yours. I want it on you before I'm back on the morning cage. The wider one I'll keep until the day the colliery closes or the day you tell me I may stop. Wear yours on the finger you write with and don't take it off for the bath. I will know if you do.
Yours underground and always above it, Tom
