Small peace symbol on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a hand held up in a V shape, with a small peace symbol tattooed on the side of one finger. The symbol is a thin dark outline of a circle with three lines meeting at its centre. The warm, soft-focus image shows a cream textured background, with pale painted nails in the foreground.

Nobody on the Salt Road trusted the well at Kessa Bend, because two families had been drawing from it for eleven years and neither would let the other near the rope. Ruth Abado kept the north bucket and Tomas Vell kept the south, and every morning they paced the sand between them so no one could say the other had taken more than his share.

The summer the wind stopped, a boy came walking up the road alone, carrying a goatskin of water he had not been allowed to drink. He had no family left to claim him. Ruth saw him first and lifted her arm to call the south side, two fingers spread, the old signal that meant come and see. Tomas saw it, and for the first time in years he lifted his own arm back.
They met at the stone rim with the boy between them, and nobody spoke for a while. Then Tomas took a nail from his coat and scratched a circle into the rim, and from its centre he drew three lines out to the edge, dividing it like the spokes of a cart wheel that had lost its felloe. Ruth said that was a poor sort of map. He said it was the only map he had. The boy drank first, from the middle, where the lines met.
Travellers still stop at Kessa Bend and find the mark worn smooth, with the two bucket ropes hanging from the same beam. Nobody remembers who scratched it, but every bucket on that beam is lowered now from the place where the lines meet.
