Arrow tattoos on two fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two fingers of a hand are shown, each with a small black tattoo. The top finger carries a horizontal arrow with feathered fletching and an arrowhead, drawn in thin, even linework. The lower finger has a smaller arrow crossing a compact floral or rosette motif in fine black lines and light stippled shading, set against a dark leather surface.

Dear Oren,

The arrow you sent came up the tether on Tuesday, wrapped in the same brown paper you always steal from the galley. Mother read the card before I did. She said nothing, just put the kettle on and stood with her back to me, which is how she says things now. The shaft was ash, cut from the last tree on the orchard ring, and the fletching was real: three grey feathers from a bird that does not exist anymore. That means you traded something for them. I know you. You always bargained with what you could not afford.
I have pinned it above the bench where the seed trays used to sit. The rosette you asked me to draw on the nock end is still a bit lopsided, the way mine always were, but Dad would have laughed at the stippling. He called stippling "a way of admitting you cannot be bothered to finish a line". You finished every line you started, though, even the ones you should have left alone.
The tether lifts again at dawn. I am going to walk the ring to the old pump house and dig up the shaft you buried under the blue pipe. You wrote that it was safe there. If it is, I will bring it up with me, and you can tell me in person what the feathers cost.
Love, Ines
