Smiley face tattoos on two fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are held together with adjacent fingers touching, and each finger carries a simple smiley face drawn in black ink with dot eyes and a curved mouth. Thin black lines run from one figure to the other, forming arms that appear to link them. The close, slightly wide-angle shot shows a plain silver band on one finger, with a white table and wooden floor blurred in the background.

Sit closer, the lot of you, the lamp is failing and I'll not waste my breath shouting over the scrubbers. Yes, that's the one. Two little faces grinning up from the knuckles of a pair of hands. Your grandmother's grandmother carried those marks, and she told this to her own children the way I'm telling it to you.

Back when the lift cable at Harrow Deep was still only a rumour and the crews rationed water by the thimble, two wardens called Odile and Tam were set to hold the coupling that kept the drum from spinning off its axle. It was a job for four hands, and they had two. So they stood knuckle to knuckle in the cold for nineteen hours, and every time one of them slipped, the other caught them by the wrist.

Between shifts they drew on each other with a leaking pen from the ration crate. Two faces, dot eyes, mouths turned up, because nobody on that station had seen much to frown about. Then they gave each figure an arm and ran the lines across the gap, so the pair of them stayed tethered like a joke nobody had finished.

The coupling held. The ink faded, as ink does, but every warden after them had their fingers drawn over again, and again, until the faces became the mark of the station. Now hold out your hands, the both of you, and let's see who needs a face.
