Dancing figures tattooed on four fingers

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand rests on a dark speckled surface with four fingers tattooed, each with a simple black outlined figure in a mid-motion pose with raised arms or legs. The linework is uniform and bold with no shading, and the figures are set along the length of each finger. The tattoos are entirely black ink on pale skin, and the composition is close and centred on the hand.

Dilys had four pieces of chalk left and a hoarding that ran the length of the bus station, so she drew fast. The first figure went up with its arms flung over its head, a sunburst dropped above it like a lamp someone had switched on. Kit stood behind her with a flask of tea he kept forgetting to hand over, watching the man from the council walk the far side of the road with his hands in his coat.

"He's going to make you scrub it off," Kit said.

"Let him try. Nobody scrubs a thing that's making the queue smile." She blew the chalk dust off the second figure, a small one with a bent leg, then the third, stretched tall as a lamppost. Her knees cracked when she stood. The bus to Carlisle pulled in, and the driver looked at the wall, then at her, and lifted two fingers from the wheel.

By four o'clock the council man had stopped on the pavement. He stood with his bag over one shoulder and then, without quite deciding to, he lifted an arm and bent one knee, the way the last figure was bent. A woman with a pushchair laughed and did the same. Kit grinned and nudged the flask at Dilys.

The council letter came on Monday. It asked whether the hoarding could be reviewed. Dilys pinned it to the kitchen wall beside a photograph of the four dancers, and under it she wrote in pencil, in her careful capitals, that the figures were not finished yet.
