Crossed arrows design
Black and grey · Flash
Two solid black arrows cross diagonally through the centre of the image, with arrowheads pointing up and feathered fletching at the lower ends. The shapes are flat black fills with no shading, outlines or grey tones. The plain white background and symmetrical composition give it a simple, bold silhouette.

Sit closer, the lot of you, for my ears are going the way of the bell rope and I'll not repeat the middle of this. Two bowmen stood either side of the Wenlow ford the spring the river took the mill. Hugh Tallant shot from the north bank and Eudo Marr from the south, each with a grudge older than the mill itself, over a heifer nobody ever saw again.

Brother Anselm, who kept the infirmary and had no stomach for killing, walked down between them carrying a pot of salve and a psalter. He stood in the reeds where their lines of fire met. Hugh loosed first, out of spite, and his arrow climbed the grey sky and hung there longer than any arrow should. Eudo loosed to answer it, and the two shafts crossed high above the water, feathers meeting, then tumbled down and struck the mud at the monk's feet in the shape you see carved over our cloister door.
Anselm pulled them free, one head still warm from the flight, and carried them up to the abbot. The abbot said the Lord had drawn a letter for them and they had better learn to read it. Hugh and Eudo were made to carry those crossed shafts to the orchard gate every Sunday until they agreed on a boundary, which took eleven years and one wedding.
The feathers rotted long ago. The heads are still in the wall, pointing up, and the gate is still called the Crossing. Mind your step on the way out, and say a prayer if you pass it, for it's the only peace anyone in this parish ever settled by shooting at it.
