Arrow with follow your arrow script
Lettering · Mixed · Flash
A flat, bold illustration of an arrow running horizontally across a white background. The words follow your arrow are written in a looping script along the shaft, with a purple and black fletching at the tail and a purple arrowhead at the tip, plus two hanging feathers, one purple and one black. The shapes are solid fills with no shading, and the purple and black palette is set against the plain white space.

The lane is glass again, so Dad has taken the tractor to the top field and left me the ewes, which means I am writing this at the kitchen table with my boots still on and one hand round a mug that has gone cold. You will laugh, but the barn owl has come back to the hayloft. I saw her on Tuesday, sitting on the beam above the feed bins as if she had paid the rent.

I found your feathers in the tin on the dresser when I was hunting for the twine. The two you pulled from the crow's nest by the gate, one black and one lilac-grey that you swore was lilac because the light was odd. You left them behind with a note that just said keep these, which was typical. I have tied them to the arrow you carved from the ash stake, the one we never finished. It hangs by the back door now, where the draught gets at it and makes it knock.
Mum asked last night whether you'd write back. I said you'd write when you had something worth saying, which is what she always said about Dad. I don't think either of us believes that. What I think is that you went off towards the city like a shaft into the dark, and you should keep looking where it lands, not where we'd have aimed it.
The arrowhead I dug out of the furrow in October is on the windowsill. I've decided it's yours. Follow it if you want, or don't, but send a postcard so I know which way you went. The lambs come in March. Come and see one before they're all grown and stupid.
Love, Jess
