Dreamcatcher mandala with feathers
Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing shows a dreamcatcher with a circular mandala at the top, centred on a five-pointed star and surrounded by bands of dots, scallops and triangles. Five feathers hang from the base on fine strands, each filled with solid black patterns and small detail. The image is entirely black ink on white, with no shading gradients, and the composition is centred and symmetrical.

The generator coughs twice before it catches, and by then Mrs Oakes has already hung the hoop from the hook above the cash tin, the way she has every night since the fair left Thetford. You are meant to be counting change for the candyfloss, not watching a ring of willow and black thread turn in the draught from the door.

'Count the points on the star,' she says, without looking up from her crochet. You count five. 'Every town we stop in gets one. Five towns and the star closes.' She nods at the feathers hanging from the bottom of the hoop, each one banded with dots and stitched with patterns so fine they look printed. 'Those are for the nights that didn't go right.'
You ask which night was the bad one. She says the feathers don't say, the hoop does the sorting. Outside, the big wheel's lights stutter, a child shrieks with delight, and somebody's dad swears at a rigged ring toss. You think about the ride lads stripping the lorries at dawn and your own bag packed under the bunk. She says the dreamcatcher holds on to what you need to forget and lets the good things drift through the middle, where the star is.
When the fair pulls out at six, you tie a spare feather to the caravan door with red wool, because the wind keeps stealing the loose ones. In the mirror the wheel folds down into its lorry, and the wool lifts and settles, and you stand a while on the verge with the hoop in your hands, counting the points again in case one has been added while you weren't looking.
