Arrow with script down the nape of the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A vertical arrow tattoo runs down the nape of the neck, with a diamond-shaped arrowhead at the top and a feathered fletching at the base. The words She will be free are written in thin, flowing cursive along the shaft, drawn in fine black linework. The ink is black only, and the photo is a close, straight-on view of the back of the neck with the ears and hairline at the top edge.

Dear Nell,

I am writing this on the back of a timetable because the pen I brought ran dry somewhere past the goods yard, and because Mr Harrow has taken to counting the minutes I spend at the tea urn. The 7.40 left without me this morning. Walter found me on the bench by lost property, holding the brown paper parcel with the label still knotted round its string, and he didn't ask a single question, which is how I knew he had guessed the rest.
The label is the reason I'm writing. It was tucked inside the lining of Gran's old travelling case, the one with the brass corners, and the words on it are in her hand: She will be free. Beneath them she has drawn an arrow, a diamond point at the top and three long feathers at the base, the sort of arrow you might sketch on a ticket to show which way the carriage faces. I always thought it was a tag for a dog's collar. Walter says she used to send parcels from this very platform in 1921, addressed to nobody in particular, and that they always arrived.
So I have decided to do what she apparently did. I am not going to Leeds to be sensible. I am taking the case, the label and the 8.15 to Carlisle, and I will tie one of the feathers to the rail at the end of the platform where the wind is strongest, so that whoever comes after me knows which way to go.
Don't tell Mum before Thursday. Tell her the case was stolen. She'll believe that more readily.
Love, Bea
P.S. The tea here is undrinkable. You were right about that.
