Black and grey feather tattoo with an infinity loop containing the words life and love, shown on a patch of skin.

Feather and infinity script tattoo

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A shaded feather with a curled quill runs diagonally across the upper part of the design, with the cursive words life and love set inside an infinity symbol below it. The feather is rendered with soft grey shading and fine detail, while the script and infinity loop use crisp, uniform black linework. The image is entirely black and grey, with the tattoo centred against pale skin in a close, angled shot.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink on the ship's chart table had gone sticky in the heat, so Marguerite wrote with a stolen quill and kept the page flat under the lamp. Three weeks out from Valparaiso, the sea had settled into a long grey swell that made the whole cabin sway like a cradle. She wrote about the albatross that had followed them since the Horn, how it dipped its wing as if to say good morning, and how the cook had sworn it carried the souls of drowned men.

She did not write about the letter she had found in the bottom of her sea chest, the one her brother had folded and never sent. It was in his handwriting, looping and impatient, and it said only that the word for living and the word for loving were the same in the old language of their village, and that he would rather be wrong about that than right about anything else. She had laughed at him once for believing it. Now she read it twice by candlelight and set it between the pages of the logbook.

On the last night of the crossing a feather came down onto the deck by the bow, grey and soft, the barb still trembling. The albatross had shed it, or the wind had pulled it from some gull. She tucked it into the envelope with her letter and sealed the flap with wax that smelled of pine resin.

At the post office in the harbour she asked for the address in Sheffield, then changed her mind and asked for a second stamp. She wanted him to know that she had come back the long way, round the whole curve of the world, and that the feather had made it too.
