Black and grey fine line infinity symbol tattoo spelling hakuna and matata, with a shaded feather running through it, on the inner forearm.

Infinity feather with hakuna matata script

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo forms an infinity symbol made from thin black script reading hakuna and matata, with a feather crossing the loop from its centre. The feather is shaded in soft greys with fine strokes along its vane, while the lettering is solid, even black line work. The photograph is taken close up on pale skin against a dark background, with the design filling most of the frame.

Dear Owen,

The pit wheel stopped on Tuesday and it has not turned since, so the whole street has taken to sitting on its front steps waiting for news. Your dad's old mate Dai came round with a tin of Bovril and a folded letter from the colliery office, and I put the kettle on and let him talk himself empty. You know what he's like.

Your gran's feather is still in the drawer under the good tablecloth, the grey one she picked off the back wall after the magpie fought the cat. She said a feather carried across water brings luck. You took it when you left for Ndola and I told you it was daft. I have been thinking about it since the letter came.

Hakuna matata, you wrote on the postcard, and then underlined it twice, as if I'd need reminding what it meant. I looked it up in the library on Thursday with Mrs Pugh squinting over my shoulder. No worries, the book says. No worries for the rest of your days. I laughed out loud in the reading room, and she shushed me.

The shaft will open again by spring, Dai reckons, and then you can tell me all about the copper and the heat and whatever it is you're digging up under that sun. Send me another feather when you can. I'll be watching the post like a hawk.

Love, Mam
