Fine line pine tree on the upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A single tall pine or fir tree, drawn with a thin central trunk and sweeping, feathered branches that narrow towards the top. The linework is crisp and dark black with no shading or fill, so the branches read as sparse strokes against the skin. The tree sits upright and centred in a close crop of the arm, with a dark blue sleeve visible at the left edge.

Brother Aldric was sent up the ridge in the last week of the frost with a sack of seed and orders to plant nothing that would not survive the wind. The abbot said the community had lost two orchards already to the weather, and the goats had eaten the rest. So the lay brother dug his holes in the stony ground behind the gate, put one cone in each, and went back down the hill without looking round.

Most did not come up. The brothers laughed at him at Lauds and asked whether he expected the trees to walk down to the refectory. Only the one beside the gatepost pushed through in spring, a green thread no longer than a finger, and Aldric tied a strip of linen to it so the mules would not trample it. Every winter after, the snow piled on the other trees and bent them flat, but this one shed its load down its long narrow sides and kept growing straight up toward the bell.
When Aldric was old and the abbey was poor, a traveller came asking for a roof-beam long enough to span the chapel. The abbot looked at the pine by the gate for a long time, then told the brothers to fetch the saw. They worked all morning. Aldric sat on the bench with his hands in his sleeves and said nothing, because there was nothing he had not already said to the abbot over forty winters.
The beam went up over the chapel that summer, and the tree lay cut in the yard where it had fallen. The following spring, a green thread came up from the root.
