Fine line black tattoo of an arrow with the word liam in script on the inner forearm.

Arrow with script name on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black arrow runs horizontally across the forearm, with the feathered fletching on the left and the arrowhead on the right. The word liam is written in flowing script along the shaft, with the lines fine and even. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the tight crop centres the design with a little of a person's hair visible at the left edge.

The rain had come in sideways off the Vell, and Maud Tennick was still picking goose down out of her sleeves when the bailiff of Carrowmere knocked on the workshop door. She had three hundred shafts drying on the rack, and every one needed its mark before the autumn fair.

'The duke wants his arrows burned with his own sigil,' the bailiff said, holding out a wax tablet with the crest pressed into it. Maud looked at the crest, then at the boy sweeping feathers into a basket by the hearth. Liam had come to her at nine, thin as a bowstring, and he could hold a fletching jig steadier than most journeymen. 'Mine go out with my mark or not at all,' she said.

The bailiff left grumbling. That night Liam found the old iron branding stamp at the back of the drawer, the letters worn almost smooth, and asked her to show him how to heat it. She let him try on a spare shaft. The letters came out crooked and one ran into the next, but they were his to put there.

In spring a rider brought back one of the autumn arrows, its shaft scorched with a name that was not the duke's. The bowman had loosed it at a hart on the high moor, and the animal had run a mile before it fell. Maud turned the arrow over in her hands and read the name aloud twice. Liam was already reaching for the next shaft, the iron glowing orange at his feet.
