Script hope word on an arrow on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows an arrow with its head pointing up and to the left, and the word hope written in flowing cursive script along the shaft. The fletching at the other end is drawn as a small feather with fine outlines. The linework is thin and uniform in black ink, with no shading or colour, and the design sits diagonally across the skin in a close crop.

You will laugh at me, but I cut a word into the hickory before I wrapped the grip. Hope, in your own hand, the way you wrote it on the back of the tally slips when you thought I could not read. The letters run long along the shaft like a stream finding its level, and I cut them with the finest nib I own so the grain would not swallow them. At the nock end I drew the feather the way Papa taught me, one barb at a time, until it looked as if it could still catch a gust.
The guide from Oloron came up at noon for the mail and took the parcel without asking what was in it. He says the pass will be open to the lower hut by Thursday if the cornice holds. I told him to tell the herder on the far side that the point faces up and to the left, toward the notch in the ridge where the sun clears first, because that is where you will be standing when you see it.
Come down when the thaw is proper, not before. I have kept the stove lit and the bread is only a little stale. Your sister, Ines.
