Arrows and circles on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black tattoo of two arrows, one pointing up and one down, runs vertically down the forearm, crossed by three overlapping circles and a curved arc. The linework is fine and even, with the outlines in solid black ink and no shading. The design is centred on a pale forearm against a warm wooden floor, with the photograph taken straight on.

The miller's daughter Ysolde had been promised to the blacksmith's son since the spring frost, but the frost had come back in June and the banns were read to an empty church. Her father rode out to the crossroads with the bridal bow across his saddle, the old one that had belonged to his mother, and he said to anyone who asked that the wedding would go ahead at the next full moon whether the groom came or not.

The groom did not come. He had gone north with the drovers, and the road north was long and wet. On the third night of the full moon Ysolde walked out past the mill race and stood under the single oak where the three hedges met. She had no arrow of her own, so she took one of her father's from the quiver he left on the gatepost, and she drew the bow towards the sky the way he had taught her when she was small, with the string against her cheek and her eye on the top of the wood.
The arrow went up through the three rings of light that the moon made in the cloud, and it did not come down where she expected. It came down behind the hill, where the drovers' fire was burning low, and the groom, who had been lying awake with his boots on, looked up and saw the shaft standing in the grass beside him, fletched in grey and pointing home.
He was at the mill gate before the bread was out of the oven. Her father said nothing at all. He only went to the gatepost, took down the quiver, and counted the arrows, and found the one that was missing was the one that had come back.
