Colour tattoo of an Art Nouveau style woman with red hair and white roses in a circular frame, placed on the upper arm and shoulder.

Art Nouveau woman with white roses on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A woman with flowing red hair, wearing white roses in her hair and a yellow drape over one shoulder, is framed within a circular border of red swirling lines. The outlines are bold and the shading is smooth, with soft pink tones on the skin and layered whites on the flowers. A teal background sits behind the figure and flowers, and the design fills the upper arm.

Dear Hélène, the stone has cracked again, and Monsieur Varin says the new tints from Lyon are no better than chalk, so I have spent three nights grinding ochre by lamplight. You will laugh, but the commission is a poster for the Théâtre de la Rue Saint-Denis, and the actress they have hired insists her hair must be painted the red of a fox in October. Varin promised her we could manage it. We cannot, not without the Lyon tints.

The master's drawing is pinned above the press: a woman turned half away from the viewer, a yellow drape slipping from one shoulder, white roses heaped in her hair as though she had walked through a hedge of them. Around her runs a border of red lines that curl like wind through ribbon. Every time I look up from the inking I feel I am late for something.

Yesterday I carried the proofs down to the quai to match the teal wash against the river light. An old flower seller there asked what I was hiding under my coat. When I showed her the sheet she laughed and said she had sold roses to a woman with exactly that hair, years ago, and that the woman had never once paid on time. She gave me three stems for the sake of the picture, and I have put them in a jar beside the stone where the ink can smell them.

This morning the last sheet came off the press with the whites lifted clean and the roses almost luminous. For a moment the figure seemed to glance back over her shoulder at me, as if someone in the street had called her name. I am keeping the first proof for you. Come and see it before the bills go up on the walls.
