Flapper with peacock feathers and rose on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman in profile wears a red headband topped with a turquoise peacock feather plume fixed by a pearl-edged brooch, with a long drop earring and a double strand of pearls. Bold black outlines define the features and hair, with smooth colour shading on the face and skin. A large red rose with green leaves sits below the figure, and the composition fills the upper arm.

My uncle called her the duchess and charged her a penny more for the split tin, which she paid without complaint. On a Tuesday in February she put a pearl on the marble instead of coins. It was round and grey-pink and heavier than it looked. 'For the flour,' she said. 'Don't let your uncle tell you it's paste.' I held it up to the oven light and saw the warm hole in the middle where it had been threaded.
We ran the rest of the batch with the back window open, the cold coming in over the trays. Lil leaned on the sill and watched the sky over the gasworks lose its black, first to navy, then to the colour of a bruised plum. She tapped the glass where her reflection sat over the street. 'Every morning I come here to see what I look like when nobody's expecting me,' she said, and went off with her loaf under one arm and the feather bobbing down Old Compton Street. I put the pearl in my apron pocket, where it stayed until the bread was out.
