Artist's palette and brushes on a wrist

Other · Mixed · Photo

A small tattoo of a wooden artist's palette with a thumb hole, two paintbrushes crossing over it, and six dabs of paint in red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. The palette is shaded in brown with a dark outline, and the paint dabs are filled with bright, slightly glossy colour. The design sits centred on the inner wrist against a plain tiled floor, with a small section of denim and trainers visible in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Pell had given Ada the attic room on one condition: no paint on the wallpaper. So Ada kept her palette on the sill, where the light came off the harbour clean and grey. Six dabs of colour had dried on the wood, the red gone chalky at the edges, the blue shining where her thumb had worn it. She had mixed the green for the lifeboat house that morning and scraped it off again before breakfast, because it was the wrong green and she knew it before the brush touched the board.

The commission was a dull one. Alderman Starr wanted his new hotel painted as though it were already full, with lamps in every window and a family on the steps. Ada had painted him three hundred windows in her head already. Her sable and her thin rigger lay crossed over the palette like knitting needles left on a chair, and every afternoon the tide swung the moored boats a little further out on their chains.

On the Thursday a boy from the chandler's brought up a tin of ultramarine she had ordered in March, with a bill for twice what it should have been. She laughed, then stopped laughing. She sent him back down the hill with a note and a sixpence, and went to the window to paint the harbour as it actually was: grey water, a red buoy, the pier lamp just lit. It took until dark. When she finally looked up, the purple of the dusk had crept across the sill and pooled in the thumb hole of the palette, and she dipped her smallest brush into it without deciding to.
