Three cartoon fairies on the inner wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three small cartoon fairies in flowing gowns, one blue, one green and one red, drift in a diagonal line across the inner wrist. Each figure has clean outlines and flat, solid colour fills, with a few faint sparkles around them. The composition is light and open, with plenty of bare skin around the small design.

Dear Tom, The council man says the north tower of Hollin Keep will come down before anyone gets round to surveying it, so on Thursday I took a flask and my good scissors up the stair to see what was left worth saving. The light was going orange over the moor when three women came up through the broken arch, drifting a foot off the flags as if the stone had never been their concern. One wore a gown the colour of a bluebell wood, one a green that looked slept in by moss, and the last, all red and flounce, carried a wand that was plainly a length of barley sugar gone wrong.

They were arguing about a christening. It had happened in the great hall four hundred years ago, and by the sound of it none of them had got over the gift they were supposed to give. The blue one said the baby ought to have been given kindness. The red one said nobody had ever asked for kindness, and that a girl needed a bit of spark. The green one just kept saying 'Oh, do stop,' while little gold sparkles fell off her sleeves and settled on my flask lid like crumbs from a biscuit tin.
I offered them tea in the chapel, which is the only room with a roof. They declined, very politely, and then the red one asked if I had any sugar, and I said no, not even a lump, and she sighed so hard the candle went out. When I relit it they had gone, out over the ivy in a line, still bickering, and I was left with a flask of cold tea and a scatter of glitter that won't wash out of my cuffs.
I haven't told the council. Bring your boots at Easter and I'll show you the worn patch on the chapel step where they always land. Don't expect a wand. Your nan, Edie
