UFO and pyramid with eye on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a flying saucer emitting wavy beams above a pyramid containing an eye, with a crescent moon and four small four-pointed sparkles around them. The linework is thin and slightly offset, with red and blue outlines that overlap to create a doubled, three-dimensional effect. The design sits diagonally across the forearm against a blurred green plant background.

Dear Nell,

I am writing this at the kitchen table because the good paper is in the drawer under the stairs and I could not face going up there in the dark. Mum has finally gone to bed. The marquee is up on the lawn, and the men from the hire company left a strip of blue tape that snaps in the wind like something trying to get out.

You will laugh, but I found Dad's pencil case while I was looking for the candles. Inside was the old red and blue pen he used for correcting his crosswords, and a sheet of graph paper folded into eight. On it he had drawn a saucer hovering over a pyramid, with an eye in the middle of it and four little stars round the edge. Both colours had been pressed so hard the paper had gone glossy. He used to say the lights over Clee Hill were not aeroplanes, and that anyone who needed cardboard glasses to see the world properly was welcome to borrow his.

I sat there a long time. Then I thought about Tom's mother, who has never once in eleven years said Dad's name out loud, and how she asked me yesterday whether the pyramid on the cake would be "tasteful". I told her it would be a sponge with a bit of nonsense on top.

So tomorrow, when the vicar asks who gives this woman, I am going to look up past the marquee and wink. I have decided. Your bridesmaid's dress is hanging on the back of my door, and I have tucked the folded graph paper into its pocket, where nobody will find it but you.

Love, Jo
