Astronaut and flag on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic astronaut in a spacesuit sits in the lower centre, with the visor reflecting a grey lunar-style landscape and small figures. Behind it, a waving flag with white stars fades into soft greys, and the shading gives the fabric folds depth. The piece uses only black ink and greys, with strong contrast and smooth gradients across the composition.

Dear Tobiah,

The flag came down off the Harbour Hall roof the morning after the stonecutters left the Kingdom of Vell, and I have been stitching its stars back on ever since, because the old seamstress who did them has gone to her sister's in Pellmoor and her white thread will not match anything in the market. Forty-one stars, nine lost to the gale. I counted twice.

The helmet they sent up to the signal tower came with the glass already cracked at one corner. Mr Adair, who keeps the lamp, says the reflection in the visor is the grey plain the Queen's astronomers swore to, the one where the little men stand planting their pole. I have watched it through the spyglass a dozen times and still cannot tell whether the figures are waving or simply bent against the wind.

Last night the lamp guttered at midnight and I climbed up with the oil can. Through the visor the plain was lit by nothing but the moon itself, and the figures in it had turned their backs on us, as though they had already gone home. I stood there until the cold got into my knuckles. Then I took the needle from my apron and sewed the last star on by feel, in the dark. It sits slightly crooked, and I have decided that is how it should stay.

Come home at the spring tide. Bring the good thread.

Yours, Ilse
