Astronaut helmet and flag on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic astronaut in a spacesuit and helmet fills the lower centre of the design, with the visor reflecting a pale lunar-style landscape. Behind it, a large flag with star shapes ripples across the upper area, with soft shading that gives the fabric depth. The image shows two views of the same arm, with the tattoo rendered in smooth black and grey tones.

You are the only one left on platform two at Hollowmere Junction, and the signal lamp has been red for so long you have stopped expecting it to change. The clock above the waiting room reads twenty to one. In your pocket is a single ticket to Carlisle that your grandfather bought in 1969. He never used it. On the night he was meant to travel, he went out to the garden to watch the moon instead and did not come in until morning.

A porter in a navy cardigan comes out with a broom and asks whether you're waiting for the milk train. You say no. He leans on the handle and looks at the waiting room window, where the platform lights make a pale grey surface against the black glass, pitted and empty like the ground in the old photographs. "Funny thing," he says. "On a clear night you can see the whole sky in that window, if you stand where the glass is dirty enough."

You step closer. In the reflection the lamp at the far end hangs over the rooftops like a moon, and your own dark shape stands in front of it, small and rounded by the glare. You think of the film he used to project onto a sheet in the front room every July: the flag stiff in the still air, a man bouncing slowly across grey dust. He never once admitted he had been afraid of staying behind. He only said he had wanted to be the one who looked up.

The signal turns green. The porter lifts his broom. You drop the ticket in the bin, pick up your bag and walk towards the train, with the sky still caught in the window behind you.
