Atom and compass rose tattoo design

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil drawing of a compass rose with N, E, S and W points, with a stylised atom at its centre. Several elliptical orbits with small electrons cross around a shaded nucleus, and the compass arrows extend beyond the orbits. The linework is bold on the orbits and lighter on the compass rings and bearings, with soft grey shading in black and grey.

You are forty miles past the last petrol station when the needle in the dashboard compass starts to drift, not north but in a slow circle, like something trying to remember its orbit. The road runs straight as a ruled line through the scrub, and the only other mark on the map is the survey pin your father left in a biscuit tin under the passenger seat.

He worked nights at the observatory above Harrow Mere, and he used to say a compass rose and an atom are drawn the same way: a centre you cannot see, and rings of things that never quite touch it. You pull onto the verge, cut the engine, and the silence arrives like weather.

You unfold his sketchbook on the warm bonnet. Pencil ellipses, four small electrons, a planet with a shaded ring, and beneath it in his square capitals: BEARINGS FROM THE HOUSE OF LIGHT. You take the arrow marked south, walk four hundred paces by the thin glow of the stars, and find a shallow dish in the ground where something once struck hard and then went quiet.

You stand at the centre of it with the compass still turning in your palm. For the first time it settles, pointing at nothing you can name, and you understand he never meant you to find the middle, only to see how far out the orbits reach. You write the coordinates on the back of his drawing, get back in the car, and drive on with the window down.
