Autumn leaves and acorns beside an ear
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows two large maple-style leaves, a smaller oak-style leaf and two acorns, all outlined in thick black linework with fine black veins. The leaves are shaded with orange, yellow and green gradients, with the lower oak leaf fading from orange into green. The design sits on the side of the head beside the ear, with dark hair visible at the lower edge of the frame.

Marta had counted the switchbacks twice before the snow came down the pass, and by the third bend the path had gone soft under the fallen leaves, orange and rust and one bruised green that stuck to her boot. Her brother's mule had stopped at the cairn below Hob's Gap and would not go further. She left it with the saddle bags and kept walking, because the letter in her coat said the herbalist would be at the hut until the first hard frost and not a day after.

The hut was empty except for a jar of acorns on the sill, each one capped and dimpled, lined up like coins. A note in a hand she knew better than her own said they were for the valley people, to be ground for the winter bread when the oaks failed. Her mother had always said the jays stole more than they hid. Marta picked one up and it was warm from the stove, though the stove had been cold for a week.
She sat on the step with the acorn in her palm and watched the maple on the slope below turn from gold to the colour of brick while the wind worked at it. Down the pass a bell rang twice, the signal she had agreed with her brother for news, and then nothing. She understood then what the jar was for. Someone had been waiting here through a whole summer, planting the mountain one nut at a time so that whoever came next would have something to eat.
She put the acorn back in its place, third from the left, and went down to fetch the mule.
