Baby elephant with heart balloon on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small grey cartoon elephant lifts a blue heart-shaped balloon on a thin string with its trunk, and has pink cheeks and ears. Soft, blended shading gives the balloon and elephant a watercolour look, with dark outlines on the elephant. A blue puzzle piece sits lower in the frame, and partial purple and green flowers appear at the right edge.

The last blue heart balloon had been bobbing over Dilys Pryce's stall since Thursday, and by Saturday she had stopped expecting anyone to buy it. Children wanted the sharp red ones that squeaked when you rubbed them, or the silver stars that spun. Nobody wanted a heart the colour of a swimming pool, tugging at its string as if it had somewhere better to be.

Then the little grey elephant came round the side of the coconut shy. It was not a real elephant, of course. It was Tobias Lund's costume, stitched from old dust sheets, and Tobias was seven and had been told he could hold only one thing at the fair. He stopped at her stall, raised his cardboard trunk, and pointed at the heart.
"That one's sad," he said. "It's on its own."
Dilys looked at the balloon, then at the boy, and found she had no answer a seven-year-old would accept. She untied it and handed him the string. He wound it twice round his wrist, lifted his trunk as though the balloon were leading him, and marched off towards the big wheel with the heart bobbing above his head.
She watched until the crowd closed over the grey shape. When she packed the tins that evening, she found a single blue puzzle piece on the boards, the sort that came out of the tombola drum, and she slipped it into her apron pocket. Some days the last thing you have is not for sale, and you let it go anyway.
