The tarmac shimmers ahead like spilt water, and the only thing moving on the Lindeth flats is you. The van's radio gave up somewhere past the last windmill, so you drive in the particular quiet that comes with forty miles of nothing. Then a grey cat walks out of the scrub and stops dead in the middle of your lane, as if it had an appointment with you.

You brake. The cat does not move. Behind it, half hidden under a creosote bush, a rabbit lies pressed against its flank, ears laid flat against the heat. You step out and the cat watches you the way a clerk watches a late customer. Neither of them runs. You crouch, the rabbit's nose twitches toward the cat's tail, the cat yawns and lowers its head, and that seems to be all the permission the pair of them need.

They come with you as far as the next garage, where a hand-painted sign says VACANCY in letters faded to the colour of stewed tea. The owner, a woman with flour on her wrists, takes one look at the rabbit and says the cat has been doing this for a month, walking the same ten miles each dawn to fetch home some stray it has decided belongs to it. She asks for nothing. She just nods at the dust outside, where a single track of paw prints runs back toward the hills, and says that some roads only ever get drawn once.
