Two rabbits under yellow stars on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon rabbits sit side by side on the skin, an orange rabbit gazing up towards a scatter of five yellow stars with dark outlines, and a grey rabbit facing away to the right. The linework is bold and black with soft, simple shading on the bodies and a lighter wash in the stars. The composition sits low on the arm with the stars arranged above the rabbits against a pinkish skin tone.

Every evening when the lamps went out in Thornwick Garden, the orange rabbit Marrow climbed the wall by the rhubarb bed and sat with her ears folded back, looking up. She had been told the stars were holes in the sky where light leaked through, and she did not believe it. Holes did not blink. Her friend Pell, the grey rabbit who never liked to be looked at directly, sat a little behind her in the cold grass and pretended not to care what she was staring at.

One night in late October the old gardener, Mr Ashdown, came down the path with his bucket and found them both there. He set the bucket down and said nothing for a long while. Then he pointed with his trowel at the five brightest stars and said that his grandmother had called them the Reckoning, because each one was a promise someone had made and kept. Marrow asked which promise belonged to the small one near the gate. Mr Ashdown said that was the one Pell had made to her, in the spring, when the frost took her first litter of carrots and Pell sat up all night in the shed to guard the last seedlings.

Pell said that was not a promise, only sitting up. Marrow said it was the same thing if you did it for long enough. Neither of them turned round, and the stars kept on blinking as if they had heard every word.
