Baby elephant on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A cartoon baby elephant sits with its trunk raised, drawn in loose black sketch lines with grey shading on the body. Soft blue, purple and pink watercolour washes sit behind and beneath the figure, with a few small splatter marks. The design is centred on a plain forearm against a blue-grey wall and a dark fabric background.

Mags Tully found the calf in the drying shed at Penhallow Orchard on the last Saturday of August, sitting on a heap of wet hessian sacks with his trunk raised as if he were hailing a bus. Nobody in the village owned an elephant. The travelling fair had pitched on the common on Thursday, and its owner, a man called Dessie with a van full of mismatched tent poles, swore the animal had been left behind by accident, though his paperwork said otherwise.

Mags fetched a bucket of windfalls from under the Discovery trees. The calf ate them one at a time, neatly, pips and all, then pressed his grey face against her knee. A wind came up off the estuary carrying the smell of rain. He lifted his trunk higher, stiff and certain, and over the far wall a cloud the colour of bruised plums began to gather.
By evening the rain was rattling the slate roof and Dessie's van had not come back. Mags sat with the calf under a tarpaulin and sketched him on the back of a seed catalogue, the lines loose, the shading soft as dust. She called him Pudding, because he looked like one, and he seemed to accept this.
On Monday the fair's lorry finally rolled up the lane, and Dessie climbed down ready for an argument. Mags held out the drawing instead. He studied it for a long time. "He'll want a proper field," he said at last, and went to fetch the gate. Behind it the orchard was already dropping its last apples into the wet grass, and Pudding, who had never once in his life been allowed to choose, stepped out and chose.
