Baby Groot with headphones on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Baby Groot character sits in a red pot with headphones on and a cassette player at its base, and the tree-like figure has a wide grin and green eyes. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with smooth shading on the bark and soft yellow and orange glowing circles behind the head. The tattoo is in full colour and fills the frame of a calf against a grey pavement.

Pearl had the ovens lit by four and the dough in the bannetons by half past, but the radio in the back room had died overnight, so she took the cassette player down from the shelf instead. Nobody at the bakery had used it since the nineties. Its batteries were older than the apprentice. The tape inside was labelled SUNDAY SHOUTING in biro, and when she pressed play, the sapling in the red pot on the windowsill lifted its head, pulled a pair of headphones down over its bark ears and grinned so wide that its green eyes crinkled.

Dougal was not a plant anybody had bought. He had arrived in a Co-op bag the week the flour merchant went bust, and he had spent four months being a nuisance: stealing raisins, humming through the cooling racks, answering every question with the same two words. Now he swayed to the tape with his whole trunk, mouthing the chorus in a voice like a wet cork. Behind him a halo of soft orange light came from the bulb above the proving cabinet, which Pearl had never noticed was yellow until Dougal started shining it at her.

At ten to five the tape ran out with a clunk. Dougal took off the headphones and looked at her with the face of a child who has been told the shop is closing. Pearl sighed, rewound it with a biro, and pressed play again. Behind her the first tray of loaves gave a soft, delighted sigh and rose a whole inch over the tins, as if the bread had been waiting all night for the second verse.

By six the shop smelled of crust and warm plastic, and every loaf had split along the top in a neat wide curve, the exact shape of a grin. Dougal was asleep in his pot with the headphones still on and the tape still turning, and Pearl did not have the heart to stop it.
