Dobby the house elf portrait on a thigh

Realism · Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A large portrait of Dobby, the house elf character, with large pointed ears, wide eyes and a faint smile. The face and body are rendered in smooth grey shading with soft highlights, and the eyes are the only strong colour, in green. The figure sits in a dark, blended background with a light halo behind the head, filling most of the frame.

Nobody at the reunion asked after the boiler room, which suited me, because I had come back to Hollinworth Grammar for one thing only. The hall smelled of floor polish and cold sausage rolls, and Mr Askew was still pinning name badges to people who had long since stopped needing them. I slipped out past the bike sheds and down the iron steps, and there she was, sitting on an upturned crate under the pipes with a school jumper across her knees.

Nettle had not aged a day since 1991. Her ears were as wide as serving trays, her skin the grey of pencil lead, and her eyes a green so bright they lit the boiler room on their own. She looked up without surprise. 'You tore it on the fence,' she said. 'The left elbow. You never said.'

I had. Years before, I had torn my blazer and left it in lost property, and it came back mended so neatly I never found the seam. She had mended every torn thing in the school for longer than the school had a name, and nobody had ever thanked her. I stood there in my good suit, forty-six and holding a bottle I had no use for, and said it. Thank you, Nettle. It came out clumsy and too loud for the pipes.

Her smile widened until it creased her whole face. She folded the jumper and laid it in my hands. It was warm from the pipes, the elbow stitched in grey thread, and tucked into the collar was a name tape reading GERALD in careful capitals. 'Now you are one of ours,' she said, and went back to her sewing. I climbed the iron steps with the jumper under my arm and found the reunion had started without me.
