Crowned gorilla head on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A gorilla head wearing an orange crown set with teal gems sits at the centre of the design, with a red shape behind it. The bold black outlines and smooth, flat colour fills give it a neo-traditional look, with some grey shading on the face. The image is a close, angled shot of the forearm, with pens and a small object visible in the background.

Nobody argued with Big Ray on a Saturday, not since the business with the Lambeth brothers and the chandelier. He sat on the stool beside the cloakroom hatch with his crown on, orange as a traffic cone, the teal stones catching the bulbs every time he turned his head. My uncle had found the crown in a skip behind the Locarno years back, and nobody had had the nerve to take it off him since.

The hall was called the Crown Ballroom, which was a joke until Ray arrived to fill it. Ticket money went into a biscuit tin under the bar, and every Friday Ray counted it with his knuckles, slowly, the way he counted everything. Sally from the cloakroom swore he could count to ten thousand if you gave him a banana for each one. I never tested it. I kept the books, and the books had a red line running down the middle of them, the kind a ledger gets when someone has been careless with the ink.

The trouble came in October, when a man in a camel coat tried to buy the building out from under us with a briefcase full of promises. He lit a cigar in the lobby and told Ray the crown was costume jewellery. Ray said nothing. He just stood up, which took a while, and held out one enormous hand. The man put his cigar in it. Ray closed his fist, slowly, and the man left without his coat.

We still dance on Saturdays. The stones are glass, I know that now, but the orange paint has held and the bulbs still catch the teal. When the last waltz ends, Ray tips his crown to the empty floor, and I write it down in the ledger as income.
