Back and leg tattoos on a beach

Back · Black and grey · Photo

A woman in a blue bikini walks away from the camera along a sandy beach, showing black tattoos across her upper back, left upper arm and lower leg. The back piece includes crossed weapon shapes and a banner with lettering, with ornamental shapes below the bikini strap. The leg and arm designs are detailed black linework and shading, and the image is in natural colour with a green tree background and blurred people in the distance.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourselves down by the stove and mind the cat. This is about Mags Tolley and the sign she painted over her father's chandlery door in Porthkennack, the year the herring boats came home short. Two old duelling pistols crossed above the door, and under them a ribbon banner reading FAIR WIND AND NO QUARTER, which her father thought a fine joke and the vicar thought a sin.

Now the trouble was the bow. Every morning Mags tied a blue ribbon bow at the top of that banner, and every morning Eli Varcoe, the tide-master, a long thin man who had never once been seen to smile, untied it and tied it again tighter. He said a bow on a gun was a lie about what guns were for. They went on like this for a month, and the gulls learned to wait on the rail for the knot to change hands.

Then the lifeboat went out on a black night and came back with one man less and one man more, a stranger clinging to the rail with his fingers gone blue. Eli carried him up the slipway himself. Mags fetched blankets from the shop, and when the stranger opened his eyes the first thing he saw was the sign swinging above him, the banner wet and shining in the lamplight. He laughed until he coughed. Eli never touched the bow again, and that is how you know a man can be wrong for a month and right for the rest of his life.
