Realistic butterflies across a back

Realism · Back · Colour · Photo

A woman with long blonde hair is photographed from behind, showing several butterfly tattoos across her upper back. The butterflies are rendered with shaded wings and fine detail, in shades of brown, orange, teal and grey. The blurred beach setting and warm light keep the focus on the tattoos, with a bikini top tied at the centre of the back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the Kirkgate awnings since eight, and Nadia Oyelaran had given up trying to keep the glass dry. She set the velvet tray on the trestle beside the sweet stall, where a hand-lettered card read Specimens and Curios, Pins Included. Each morning she laid out the wings she had rescued from cabinets sold off by dead men's estates: a teal emperor missing one tail, a copper fritillary, a grey hairstreak no bigger than a fingernail.

Mr Dyson, who had dealt in cabinets for forty years, came down the aisle with his collar up. "You're giving them away," he said. "Nobody pays for faded things." She told him the faded ones were the only ones she could afford to mend, and that colour came back under a fine brush if you were patient with the scales.

She spent the afternoon at the back of the stall with a magnifier and a sable brush, lifting grime from one orange wing while the rain drummed on the tarp. A girl in a borrowed raincoat watched her work and asked why anyone would keep something that had already flown. Nadia didn't answer straight away. She pressed the wing flat under a sheet of glass and said that flying was the part that wore things out.

By closing, the light had gone the colour of weak tea. The girl came back with her mother, bought the grey hairstreak for four pounds, and asked for it to be mounted on a card with the date. Nadia wrote the date in pencil, then the girl's name underneath, and slid the card into the box with the others.
