Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo
A rear view of a person in a bikini and cap standing on a longboard on a quiet road. The back is covered in script lettering, a large mushroom motif and a skull-like figure, with further tattoos on both arms and the legs. The image shows mixed colour ink, mainly reds, greens and browns, with bold outlines and simple shading against a blurred outdoor background.

The mushrooms came up after the third wet week, a flush of them along the cabin roof of the Marigold, pale caps the colour of old piano keys. Nell Harker had been told not to scrape them, so she sat on the coal hatch with a flask of stewed tea and watched them lean toward the towpath as if listening for footsteps.

Her uncle Tom had painted nearly every boat on this stretch of the canal at one time or another, and he had a rule about lettering: a name went on the bow where the hands could read it, and anything else went where only the water could see. The skull grinning out from under the tiller was his work, painted the year the Hales family lost their eldest to the lock gates. Nobody on the towpath spoke of it. The panda on the rudder was Nell's, a fat cartoon bear she had sketched at nine to make the keeper laugh, and Tom had insisted it stay.
In the bottom of his paint tin she found a row of old ink bottles, reds gone brown, greens thinned to the colour of pond weed. She mixed the last of them on a saucer and began to paint over the caps, then stopped with the brush dripping. They were not rot. They were the only things on the boat that had grown without anyone's permission, and covering them seemed a poor kind of care.
At first light she brought the Marigold through the lock with the panda watching from the rudder and the caps still beaded with dew. The keeper lifted a hand from his gate and called out that the bear looked hungry. Nell said he always did.
