Backpack and compass tattoo on upper back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A man seen from behind, shirtless and wearing sunglasses on his head, stands by water with rock cliffs behind him. A shaded grey backpack sits on the upper right back, with straps and a buckle, a compass star above it, and the word WANDERLUST with small pine trees beside it. The linework is clean and the shading is black and grey, with the compass and text making up the rest of the composition.

The third rucksack of the morning had been left under the bench on platform nine, its straps buckled tight as if someone meant to come back for it. Ruth Okonedo lifted it onto the counter in the lost property office at Carlisle station and felt the weight shift inside, heavier at the bottom than a bag of clothes should be. A brass compass hung from a carabiner on the zip pull, its needle stuck pointing at the ceiling.

She logged it the way she logged everything: date, platform, colour, a description no longer than the tag allowed. Grey canvas, two buckles, a faded patch of pines stitched near the lid. Under the flap she found a paperback with the spine broken in three places, a tin of boiled sweets, and a receipt from a hostel in Ambleside dated eleven years earlier. Nobody had claimed anything from this office in eleven years that wasn't a umbrella or a phone charger. She had worked here for nine of them and had never once met the owner of a bag that looked like it was built for leaving.
Her supervisor, Derek, leaned in the doorway with his tea. "Another one for the shelf? Wanderlust, that one."
"Give it a day," she said. "Somebody always comes back for the ones that look like they're going somewhere."
He laughed, but she was already unbuckling the bottom pocket. Inside, rolled in a sock, was a map of the Lakes folded so many times the creases had gone soft as cloth. On the cover, in capitals, someone had written NOT LOST. JUST GONE AHEAD. She put the map back exactly as she had found it, left the notes box empty, and set the bag on the top shelf where the morning light from the window reached it first.
