Om symbol tattoo on the nape

Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with dark hair pinned up, seen from behind, shows a small black Om symbol tattooed at the nape of her neck. The symbol is drawn in solid black ink with smooth, bold strokes and sits centrally below the hairline. The warm, soft-focus background and sunlit tones keep the attention on the tattoo against her bare skin and blue top.

The mould had cracked twice before Mr Pellow would let the metal near it, and by the third pour the whole yard smelled of scorched clay and wet sand. Nell stood at the rail with her sleeves rolled and watched the crucible tip, the glow sliding down the spout like syrup that had decided to be lightning.

Pellow had been casting bells in Stroud since before the war, and he had one rule he repeated like grace: a bell that rings true carries its own hum in the bronze, and the founder's only job is to stop getting in its way. The bell that had failed three times for the parish of St Aldhelm's had a note like a dropped spoon. Nell had spent a winter listening to it and could not hear what was wrong.

On the last night, after the men had gone home, she sat with the cooled mould and tapped the clay with a knuckle. The sound came back low and round, and she realised the core had been pressed from an old pattern, a curl that Pellow had chalked on the wall years ago and then wiped away. She traced it in the dust with one finger: a loop, a tail, a dot above, and a long line that hangs like a held breath.

They cast the bell the next morning with the curl cut deep into its waist. When it was hung and struck, the note went out over the valley and stayed in the air so long the rooks lifted from the elms. Pellow stood beneath it with his cap off and said nothing at all, which was the highest praise he had.
