Bad Wolf lettering on a wrist
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo reading BAD WOLF in two lines of uneven, hand-drawn capitals is shown on the wrist, just above the hand. The lettering uses thin, slightly irregular strokes with solid black ink and no shading. The background is a dark top and a blue denim cuff, and the pale skin of the hand is the main colour in the frame.

You find the words on the beech by the stile before the frost has lifted, two lines cut into the pale bark at the height of a child's shoulder. BAD over WOLF, the letters uneven, as though whoever carved them had been running and stopped only long enough to make sure the message would last. Nobody in Hollin Cross keeps wolves any more. The last one was shot on the Ashby estate before your mother was born, and her mother still crossed herself when she passed the wood.

Mrs Fenwick says the forest talks to people who listen too hard. She says it across the bakehouse counter with flour to her elbows, and you laugh, and then you walk home and find the same two words chalked on the inside of your own front door, in a hand that looks like yours but is pressed harder than you ever press.
You take the bone-handled bread knife and go back out before dawn. The cuts have softened with the damp, and someone has been there before you. Beneath the first two lines, smaller, a third word has been scored in shaky capitals. It takes you a long time to read it, because it is not a word you would ever choose to write: RUN.
You do not run. You sit on the stile with the knife across your knees until the sun clears the ridge, and then you go back to the bakehouse, where the oven is already warm and the first loaves are rising. You shape the dough the way your grandmother taught you, tight and quick, and you press your thumb into the top of each one, leaving a small, deliberate mark, so that tomorrow you will know which loaves were yours.
